Dating back to ancient Illyrian times, possibly as early as the 4th century BCE, this historic fortress near Shkodër in Albania has witnessed several renovations and expansions over the centuries. Serving as a defensive stronghold against invaders such as the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, the castle offers panoramic views of Shkodër and its surroundings from its strategic hilltop position. Legend has it that the castle was named after Rozafa, a woman who was allegedly walled into its walls during its construction. Today, Rozafa Castle stands as a symbol of Albania’s rich history and cultural heritage, drawing visitors from around the world.

04:00 PM - Visit to the city center (Marubi Museum, Historical Museum, etc.)

Explore the vibrant city center of Shkodër, starting with visits to the Marubi Museum and then the Historical Museum. Immerse yourself in Albanian photography and history as you delve into the cultural treasures of this dynamic city.

At the heart of the museum project lies the legacy of the ‘Photo-Studio Marubbi‘, established in 1856 by Pietro Marubbi, an Italian painter and photographer who settled in Shkodër. Directed and enriched by three generations of photographers until the early 1950s, the studio’s activity

was later absorbed into the communist collective anonymity. The Marubi Photo-Studio, founded in 1970, houses around 500,000 negatives and has witnessed historical images being manipulated for communist propaganda.

The Historical Museum of Shkodra, established in 1947 and initially known as the “Folk Museum”, was later expanded and relocated to a monumental 19th-century building. Initially assembled from donations and private collections, it has since been enriched through donations, purchases, and archaeological finds.

In 1996, it was transferred to the restored traditional house of “Oso Kuka”, where it remains today. Additionally, the “Rozafa” Museum, opened in 1987 within the City Castle, further enhances the city’s museum network.
