Hiking the Valbona–Theth trail: A journey through the heart of the Albanian Alps

If you’re looking for one of the most breathtaking hikes in the Balkans — or anywhere in Europe — the trail between Valbona and Theth in northern Albania is it. Tucked deep within the Accursed Mountains (yes, that’s their real name), this route blends dramatic alpine views, authentic village life, and a strong sense of accomplishment all into one unforgettable experience. Whether you’re hiking from Valbona to Theth or doing it the other way around, you’re in for a day full of nature, challenge, and beauty.

We at Co-Travel Albania know this route like the back of our hand. If you prefer to hike independently, we offer a self-guided tour package with a digital hiking map and insider tips; Valbona to Theth: Self-Guided hike, Transport + Digital map

If you’d rather relax and let someone else handle logistics, you can also choose our all-inclusive tour; Explore the Peaks: Valbona to Theth Hiking Tour which covers accommodations, meals, and transport. And of course, we’re happy to organize transport and logistics if you want to do the hike your way — just with a little help.

Starting Point: Valbona or Theth?

One of the first questions people ask is: should I start in Theth or Valbona?

There’s no wrong choice. Starting from Valbona means a more gradual ascent and steeper descent, while starting in Theth flips the experience — with a tougher climb but an easier finish. Most travelers prefer to start in Valbona because the approach includes a scenic ferry ride through Lake Koman, which is an experience in itself.

Whichever direction you choose, the trail remains the same: a 17.6 km journey winding through forests, stone paths, and panoramic mountain ridges — with the Valbona Pass reaching 1,795 meters in elevation.

That’s how stories happen – with a turning point, an unexpected twist. There’s only one kind of happiness, but misfortune comes in all shapes and sizes.HARUKI MURAKAMI

How to Get There (Without Stressing Over It)

Getting to Valbona from Shkodra involves three steps: a van ride to Koman, a ferry across Lake Koman (one of the most beautiful ferry rides in Europe), and then another transfer from Fierza to Valbona. The entire journey is an adventure — but can be a bit much to coordinate on your own.

Getting to Theth is more straightforward, with a direct van ride from Shkodra. The road into Theth is now fully paved, making it far more accessible than in the past.

If you’d rather not juggle multiple bookings, we can arrange the entire transfer for you, no stress — whether you’re heading into the mountains or coming back from them.

The Hike Itself: What to Expect

This is a moderate hike, suitable for travelers with a reasonable fitness level. Expect to spend 6 to 8 hours on the trail, including breaks, depending on your pace and photo stops (and you’ll want to stop often — the views are stunning). The trail is well-marked with red and white waypoints, and there are a few small cafes along the way during the summer months.

The climb to the pass is the most challenging part, but once you’re at the top, the sweeping views of both valleys are worth every drop of sweat. Then it’s a long descent into the opposite village — where a warm meal and cold drink are waiting.

Where to Stay: Cozy Guesthouses and Mountain Hospitality

Both villages are known for their warm hospitality and family-run guesthouses. In Valbona, we recommend:
Guesthouse Arben Selimaj
Rilindja
for comfortable rooms and homemade meals.

In Theth, consider:
Bujtina Dreni
Shpella Guesthouse
both ideally located for a post-hike rest.

We can help you book trusted accommodations as part of our self-guided or all-inclusive packages, or simply point you in the right direction if you’re organizing things on your own.

Tips for a Great Hike

Footwear matters: Hiking boots are a must. Don’t attempt the trail in sneakers or sandals.
Pack layers: Weather in the mountains changes fast, and even in summer it can be chilly at the pass.
Bring snacks and water: While there are seasonal huts along the way, it’s smart to have your own supplies.
Use a digital hiking map: Even with a well-marked trail, having GPS access offers peace of mind.
Start early: Give yourself plenty of daylight, especially if you’re not rushing.
